Evening Prayer for September 1

About 2–3 minutes · 9 Scripture passages (KJV)

Let my prayer be set forth before thee as incense; and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.

God’s Word

If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.

Today’s takeaway: Following Jesus means taking up your cross, but suffering for Him is never wasted.

By honour and dishonour, by evil report and good report

All that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.

The offence of the cross

If I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.

If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; … But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men’s matters. Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf.

Unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake

If one died for all, then were all dead: And that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again.

If we suffer, we shall also reign with him

Before you pray

Did following Jesus cost you anything today?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, You said anyone who follows You must deny himself and take up his cross daily. If I were still trying to please people, I would not be Your servant. Tonight I confess where I chose approval over obedience. Give me strength tomorrow to follow You, even when it costs me. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Pray as Jesus taught us

Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

Amen.

Blessing

I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.
