Frequently Asked Questions

About the app, the King James text, the devotional, the prayers and the quiz.

What is Holy Bible: KJV Daily Verse?

Holy Bible: KJV Daily Verse is a free iPhone app for reading the King James Bible, with a daily devotional, morning and evening prayer and a Bible quiz. All of its content is included in the app, so it works without an internet connection and needs no account.

Which King James text does the app use?

The 1769 standard text of the Authorized King James Version, the text most KJV Bibles print today, as published by Cambridge. It keeps the features of the printed page: the translators’ italics, the words of Christ in red, LORD and GOD in small capitals, the ¶ paragraph marks, the Psalm titles and the 1611 margin notes.

Why are some words in italics in the KJV?

The 1611 translators printed in italics the words they supplied to make the English read naturally, words that have no direct equivalent in the Hebrew or Greek. They are not for emphasis. A well-known example is 2 Samuel 21:19, where “the brother of” is supplied before “Goliath the Gittite”.

Why is LORD sometimes in small capitals?

In the Old Testament, LORD in small capitals stands for the Hebrew divine name YHWH, and GOD in small capitals stands for YHWH where it follows the word Lord (Adonai), as in “Lord GOD”. “Lord” in ordinary type translates Adonai or the Greek Kyrios. The app and this site keep that distinction.

What do the ¶ marks mean?

The pilcrow ¶ marks the start of a new paragraph in the 1611 printing. Printed KJV Bibles carry them only as far as Acts chapter 20, and so does this text; they are not added after that point.

Does the app work offline?

Yes. The whole Bible, all 366 devotionals, all 732 morning and evening prayers and all 612 quiz questions are stored in the app. Reading, praying and playing the quiz need no internet connection.

Do I need an account?

No. There is no sign-up and no login. Your bookmarks, highlights, notes, reading progress and prayer history are saved on your iPhone.

Is Holy Bible KJV free?

Yes, the app is free to download and use.

What does the app run on?

iPhone with iOS 16 or later. It follows your system light or dark mode, so the Bible is comfortable to read at night.

Where does the daily devotional come from?

Each day pairs a promise from the King James Bible with the reading for that day from Charles H. Spurgeon’s Faith’s Checkbook (1888), which is in the public domain. A one-line takeaway written for the app sums up the day.

How are the morning and evening prayers put together?

Each prayer opens with a call to prayer from the Psalms, then a chain of King James Bible passages on one theme, selected after the classic Daily Light on the Daily Path. A short prayer written for the app follows, then the Lord’s Prayer and a closing blessing. Evening prayer adds one question to reflect on the day.

How does the Bible quiz work?

There are 612 questions, true-or-false and multiple choice, played as 204 levels of three. Questions get harder as you go, from level 1 to level 5 difficulty, and after each answer the app shows the verse it comes from. Coins earned in the game can be spent on Tips, which rule out a wrong answer. Coins cannot be bought or exchanged for money.

Can I change the reading font and size?

Yes. The Bible reader offers four typefaces and an adjustable text size, and you can highlight verses in six colors, add notes and bookmark verses.
