Evening Prayer for May 3
Let my prayer be set forth before thee as incense; and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.
God’s Word
Perfecting holiness in the fear of God. … dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit
Today’s takeaway: Keep growing in holiness, because God has given you His Spirit for that very work.
Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom.
Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world
Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect
Every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.
Now he that hath wrought us for the selfsame thing is God, who also hath given unto us the earnest of the Spirit.
For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ
Before you pray
What one step toward holiness could you take tomorrow?
Prayer
Holy God, You want truth in my inward parts, not just a good appearance. Cleanse me from everything that defiles body and spirit. But You made me for this very thing, and You have given me Your Spirit as a pledge. Tonight I give You the day, and I trust You to keep making me like Christ. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Pray as Jesus taught us
Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
Amen.
Blessing
I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.
