Evening Prayer for July 3
Let my prayer be set forth before thee as incense; and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.
God’s Word
Things which are despised, hath God chosen
Today’s takeaway: God uses ordinary, unlikely people, so your weakness is no barrier to His power.
Behold, are not all these which speak Galilæans?
Jesus, … saw two brethren, … casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers. And he saith unto them, Follow me
Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus.
My speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.
Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit
He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
We have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God
Before you pray
Where did you feel ordinary or unqualified today, and could God use that?
Prayer
Father, You chose fishermen from Galilee, and people marveled that unlearned men had been with Jesus. You choose what the world despises. I often feel ordinary, and I am. But I did not choose You; You chose me to bear fruit. Without Christ I can do nothing. Put Your treasure in this earthen vessel so that the power is clearly Yours. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Pray as Jesus taught us
Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
Amen.
Blessing
I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.
