Evening Prayer for January 5

About 2–3 minutes · 11 Scripture passages (KJV)

Let my prayer be set forth before thee as incense; and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.

God’s Word

Set a watch, O LORD, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips.

Today’s takeaway: Ask God to guard your mouth, because words can wound or heal.

If thou, LORD, shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand?

They provoked his spirit, so that he spake unadvisedly with his lips.

Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man.

A whisperer separateth chief friends.

There is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword: but the tongue of the wise is health. The lip of truth shall be established for ever: but a lying tongue is but for a moment.

The tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.

Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.

Put off … anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds

This is the will of God, even your sanctification

In their mouth was found no guile

Before you pray

Which words from today do you wish you could take back?

Prayer

O LORD, set a guard over my mouth tonight, because I did not guard it well today. If You kept a record of my words, I could not stand. Forgive the careless, sharp, and whispering words. Put away anger and bitterness from me. Make my tongue a healing one tomorrow, and let there be no deceit in my mouth. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Pray as Jesus taught us

Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

Amen.

Blessing

I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.
