Evening Prayer for January 4

About 2–3 minutes · 4 Scripture passages (KJV)

Let my prayer be set forth before thee as incense; and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.

God’s Word

O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? The sting of death is sin

Today’s takeaway: Jesus has taken the sting out of death, so believers need not live in fear of it.

But now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.

As the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.

I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness

Before you pray

What fear about the future can you hand to Jesus, who has already won?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, You took the sting out of death by carrying my sin Yourself. I still have fears that come out at night: about my health, my family, the future. I give them to You one by one. Keep me faithful like Paul, so that one day I can say I finished my course. Tonight let me sleep as someone who is not afraid. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Pray as Jesus taught us

Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

Amen.

Blessing

I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.
