Evening Prayer for August 13
Let my prayer be set forth before thee as incense; and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.
God’s Word
Base things of the world, … hath God chosen
Today’s takeaway: Whatever you were before, in Christ you are washed, made holy, and made right with God.
Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.
You hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, … Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind
According to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour
My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD.
Before you pray
What were you before Christ found you, and what are you now?
Prayer
Father, You chose the base and despised things of the world. Some of what Paul listed describes who I was. I was dead in trespasses and sins, following the course of this world. But You saved me, not by works of righteousness, but by Your mercy, through the washing of regeneration and the renewing of the Holy Spirit. Your thoughts are higher than mine. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Pray as Jesus taught us
Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
Amen.
Blessing
I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.
