Evening Prayer for November 24
Let my prayer be set forth before thee as incense; and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.
God’s Word
What doest thou here, Elijah?
Today’s takeaway: Even when you want to run like Elijah, God knows your way and lifts you up.
He knoweth the way that I take
O LORD, thou hast searched me, and known me. Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off. Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways.
Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence?
If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me.
Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are
The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the LORD shall be safe.
Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the LORD upholdeth him with his hand.
A just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again
Let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.
The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.
Like as a father pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth them that fear him.
Before you pray
What are you doing here, and is it where God wants you?
Prayer
LORD, You asked Elijah what he was doing in the cave. You know the way I take. You have searched me and known me, and I cannot flee from Your presence. Elijah was a man just like us, tired and afraid. Though I fall, I will not be utterly cast down, because You hold my hand. You pity me as a father pities his children. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Pray as Jesus taught us
Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
Amen.
Blessing
I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.
