Evening Prayer for November 16
Let my prayer be set forth before thee as incense; and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.
God’s Word
Fellowcitizens with the saints
Today’s takeaway: You are a citizen of heaven, so live here as a pilgrim with your hope above.
Ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels, To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect
These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.
Our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.
The Father, … hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son
As strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul
Before you pray
How does being a citizen of heaven change the way you live here?
Prayer
Father, I am a fellow citizen with the saints and a member of Your household. I have come to Mount Zion, the city of the living God. The saints died in faith, seeing the promises from far off and confessing that they were strangers here. My citizenship is in heaven. As a pilgrim, help me stay clear of what wars against my soul. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Pray as Jesus taught us
Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
Amen.
Blessing
I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.
