Evening Prayer for May 18

About 2–3 minutes · 7 Scripture passages (KJV)

Let my prayer be set forth before thee as incense; and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.

God’s Word

Let us not be desirous of vain glory

Today’s takeaway: Do not chase praise for yourself, because pride can become a trap even after victory.

Gideon said unto them, I would desire a request of you, that ye would give me every man the earrings of his prey. (For they had golden earrings, because they were Ishmaelites.) And they answered, We will willingly give them. And they spread a garment, and did cast therein every man the earrings of his prey. And … Gideon made an ephod thereof, and put it in his city, even in Ophrah: and all Israel went thither a whoring after it: which thing became a snare unto Gideon, and to his house.

Seekest thou great things for thyself? seek them not

Lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh

Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.

Charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own

Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me

Did you want credit for something today?

Prayer

Lord, Gideon won a great victory and then made an ephod that became a snare. Guard me from the pride that follows success. Tonight I think of where I wanted credit today. I give that credit back to You. Teach me to be meek and lowly in heart, like Jesus, and let me find my rest in Him. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Pray as Jesus taught us

Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

Amen.

Blessing

I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.
