Evening Prayer for August 27
Let my prayer be set forth before thee as incense; and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.
God’s Word
What meanest thou, O sleeper? arise
Today’s takeaway: Wake up from spiritual sleep and set your heart on seeking God, because Jesus is coming.
This is not your rest: … it is polluted, it shall destroy you
Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.
If riches increase, set not your heart upon them.
Set your heart and your soul to seek the LORD your God; arise therefore
Why sleep ye? rise and pray, lest ye enter into temptation.
Take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares.
While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept.
Yet a little while, and he that shall come will come, and will not tarry.
Now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.
Watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh, at even, or at midnight, or at the cockcrowing, or in the morning: Lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping.
Before you pray
Is there any area of your life where you have fallen spiritually asleep?
Prayer
Lord, the ship's captain woke Jonah and told him to call on his God. Wake me up too. This world is not my rest. Set my heart and soul to seek You. The disciples slept while You prayed, and You told them to rise and pray. It is high time to wake from sleep. Keep me watching for my Master's return. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Pray as Jesus taught us
Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
Amen.
Blessing
I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.
