Evening Prayer for August 12

About 2–3 minutes · 7 Scripture passages (KJV)

Let my prayer be set forth before thee as incense; and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.

God’s Word

God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty

Today’s takeaway: God often uses the weak and unlikely so that everyone can see the victory is His.

When the children of Israel cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised them up a deliverer, Ehud … a man lefthanded

After him was Shamgar … which slew of the Philistines six hundred men with an ox goad: and he also delivered Israel.

The LORD looked upon him, and said, Go in this thy might, … have not I sent thee? And he said unto him, Oh my Lord, wherewith shall I save Israel? … behold, my family is poor in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house.

The LORD said unto Gideon, The people that are with thee are too many for me … lest Israel vaunt themselves against me, saying, Mine own hand hath saved me.

Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts.

My brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.

Before you pray

Where did you rely on your own strength instead of God's?

Prayer

LORD, You choose the weak things to shame the mighty. Shamgar had only an ox goad, and Gideon felt like the least in his family. I often feel unqualified for what You ask of me. Tonight I stop measuring my own strength. It is not by might or by power but by Your Spirit. I rest in that. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Pray as Jesus taught us

Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

Amen.

Blessing

I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.
